Georgian Glaciers – Photo Exhibition at TSU
The Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted a personal photo exhibition ‘Georgian Glaciers’ by Levan Tielidze, a PhD student from TSU.
The exhibition included amazing views of Georgian glaciers photographed by Levan Tielidze during the expeditions carried out under the aegis of the TSU Institute of Geography; as well as unique photos of Georgian glaciers of the 19th century previously unknown to the wide public, taken by a famous Italian photographer and mountaineer, Vittorio Sella; photos of glaciers taken by the scientists from the Institute of Geography in the 1930s. The visitors of the exhibition had an opportunity to view the changes occurring on glaciers as a result of global warming.
“This is my first personal exhibition, which includes about 40 photos. They were taken during various expeditions carried out under the aegis of the Institute of Geography at different times. Exhibitions with similar content have never been held in Georgia so far,” Levan Tielidze said.
“TSU Museum hosts quite an interesting exhibition; it illustrates the glaciers of Caucasus Mountains. The exhibition is extremely interesting as it contains the photos, which are less known to the wide public. These photos will allow the visitors to compare how the Caucasus Mountains looked like in the19th century and how they look today,” Alexander Maruashvili of the TSU Museum said.
A documentary titled “Expeditions on the Caucasus Glaciers” was shown during the event; it highlighted field works carried out on some glaciers of the Caucasus Mountains at different times.
The exhibition was dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the establishment of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Vakhushti Bagrationi Institute of Geography. It lasted for a week.
