Giorgi Sharvashidze Elected as New Rector of TSU
On September 23, the Academic Council of Ivane
Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) elected Giorgi Sharvashidze
as new Rector of TSU. Chairman of the TSU Election Commission, Demetre
Egnatashvili said that “all 36 members of the Academic Council
participated in the elections. Giorgi Baramidze received 6 votes; Tsira
Baramidze – 5 votes, and Giorgi Sharvashidze – 21 votes. 4 ballot papers
were annulled.” Two non-governmental organizations (Civil Society
Education Center and Young Barristers) and six observers monitored the
elections. The Academic Council endorsed Giorgi Sharvashidze’s
credentials and the latter took office on the same day.
“I want to express my huge gratitude to the Academic Council for placing its trust in me. I plan to launch my activities according to the concept, which I submitted to the Academic Council. It concerns scientific development, improvement of student life and generally, improvement of TSU’s image,” the newly elected Rector said. Former Acting Rector of TSU, Darejan Tvaltvadze congratulated Giorgi Sharvashidze on his victory in the elections. He became the 30th Rector of the Tbilisi State University.
On March 30 the TSU Academic Council accepted former Rector Vladimer Papava’s resignation. Darejan Tvaltvadze was appointed as Acting Rector of TSU on April 20.
