Rectors’ Roundtable at the University of Tartu
On August 25 the University of Tartu (Estonia) hosted Rectors’ Roundtable to discuss the effect of reduced funding and increasing competition on the activity of and cooperation between universities. TSU Vice Rector, Professor Marine Chitashvili also received an invitation from the partner University of Tartu to take part in the roundtable.
The participants discussed a wide range of issues, involving research funding models, multidisciplinary profile, issues of internationalization, etc. Presentations were made by Rector of the University of Turku Professor Kalervo Väänänen; Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University Professor Anders Malmberg; Deputy Secretary General for Higher Education and Research of the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research Indrek Reimand; Rector of Ural Federal University Viktor Koksharov.
The speakers mostly focused on the need of structural changes at the universities, reducing administrative costs, introduction of new staff policy and attraction of youth from abroad, internationalization of education and research, interdisciplinary educational and research programs and establishing a consortium of universities to carry out educational or research activities.
