16th Annual International Conference on American Studies
Rector of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Academician Vladimer Papava and U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, Richard Norland attended the inauguration of the 16th Annual International Conference on American Studies. The conference was organized by the Institute of American Studies at TSU and Georgian Association for American Studies and it was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.
“The direction of American studies at TSU is holding a conference on Georgian-American relations; it aims at studying American history, system of government, economy and key values. This is an extremely important event, as it enables scholars and students to better familiarize themselves with American values. We welcome holding of this event together with the embassy of our strategic partner, the United States,” TSU Rector, Vladimer Papava said.
U.S. Ambassador, Richard Norland said that his embassy “is a great friend” of the Tbilisi State University and expressed hope that the conference would be “interesting.”
U.S. diplomats, TSU professors, representatives of international organizations and students attended the conference. About 130 participants delivered their papers on American history, politics, education, religion, literature, art, philosophy, media, law, economy, social and women’s issues.
The aim of the conference is to study American history, social and political institutions, domestic and foreign policy, culture, philosophy, values; to disseminate knowledge; to study Georgian-American relations; to gather from various Georgian universities professors and students interested in American studies; to stimulate their research activities; to coordinate the work of Georgian specialists in American studies and deepen their contacts with foreign, first and foremost, American colleagues.
The conference will last till May 16.
