Meeting with Students
Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU), Academician Vladimer Papava met with the members of TSU Student Self-Governance to discuss a number of issues, including the expenses incurred by the Rector’s Office and administrative units, contractual terms for professors and other topical issues. President of the Student Self-Governance, Shalva Sabauri said that students raised the issue of huge financial expenses incurred by the Rector’s Office and focused on their purposefulness. “In addition, new persons have been identified at the meeting, who worked for law enforcement agencies and we will recheck this information too,” Sabauri said. He also noted that “the Rector confirmed that a so called ODR [security agency’s officer] has been assigned to the university and he did not take even a step to eradicate this wrongdoing. He does not assume the responsibility for anything.”
TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava said that they discussed all the issues related to the university’s functioning. “Their demand remains unchanged – early termination of the Rector’s term of office. My answer is simple – I do not plan to resign; however, the Academic Council has launched the procedures on early termination and the Rector does not participate in it.”
Rector Papava also said that any expenses incurred by the university are carefully documented; therefore, any talks about non-purposeful spending are absolutely unjustified. “The State Audit Service completed its audit at TSU last year and I will only welcome, if it again carries out audit in the near future. It should also be noted that just at the expense of saving administrative resources, the university managed to finance scientific research activities, to involve students in research activities, to finance studies for PhD students. So, a lot of issues were solved at the expense of reducing administrative costs,” he said.
Rector Papava expressed hope that despite differences, relations with students and resolution of problems will continue jointly, through dialogue.
