Erasmus + Contact Seminar
Representatives of 46 universities from 11 European countries and 44 Georgian universities gathered at Erasmus+ contact seminar held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on October 30. George Sharvashidze, Rector of Tbilisi State University, Irina Abuladze, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Carl Hartzell, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, and Lika Glonti, Coordinator of Erasmus+ National Office Georgia attended the event.
Erasmus+ is the EUs programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. Rector George Sharvashidze said that the purpose of the seminar is to promote direct communication between Georgian and European universities for developing partner projects. “This is the first time such large-scale contact seminar is being held in Tbilisi. There is high interest towards establishing new contacts and it is important that this tendency is growing. TSU is a champion in this direction: we have already obtained 244 projects and it means that more TSU students, professors and administrative staff have mobility opportunities with European partners.”
Irina Abuladze, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, noted that the seminar will promote internationalization of higher education in Georgia. “Erasmus + EU programme is the most important mechanism to bring Georgia’s higher education system closer to and make it part of European education system. Collaboration between institutions is one of very important elements of this program, where they obtain grants through Erasmus+ for implementing joint programs and research. ”
41 Georgian universities are participating in Erasmus+ programme in 2015-2019. Lika Glonti, Coordinator of Erasmus+ National Office Georgia, said that “besides the regional budget, Georgia has additionally received EUR 3.5 million in order to have more exchange scholarship programs for students, professors and administrative staff. It means additional 800 scholarship holders. The seminar will promote establishing direct contacts between Georgian and European universities.”
Carl Hartzell, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, supported this format of meetings and expressed hope that based on the agreement reached at the meeting, a lot of exchange programs will be implemented between Georgian and European partner universities. He also stressed the success achieved by Georgia in Erasmus+ programs.
30 institutional partnership projects were implemented within the framework of Erasmus+ EU programme; 110 Masters Scholarships were granted; 4775 Scholarships - for Georgian students and professors; 2725 Scholarships - for students and professors who arrived in Georgia from Europe.
