Award Ceremony of Student Competition “Planet Read More”
An award ceremony of a student competition “Planet Read More” was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on July 12. Three winners were revealed who received special prizes from Books in Batumi publishing house.
Beka Goginava won the first place in the competition jointly held by Tbilisi State University and Books in Batumi publishing house. The second and third places were divided between Medea Pantsulia and Vasil Karseladze, respectively.
The first place winner was awarded a training tour to Europe; the second and third place winners were awarded GEL 1000 and GEL 500, respectively. All ten finalists of the project received memorable prizes from TSU and Books in Batumi.
Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze, and founders of the publishing house, Irakli Bakuridze and Mari Korinteli attended the award ceremony. Guram Matskhonashvili, author of “Gldani – Impossible Novel,” whose book was among the competition books, was invited as an honorary guest.
Rector Giorgi Sharvashidze noted that “Planet Read More is a very important project that attracts student attention. It is an interesting competition traditionally held by Tbilisi State University and Books in Batumi publishing house. This year, interest towards the project was especially high. About 400 students participated in the first stage. Eventually 10 finalists were selected with three of them winning the competition.”
Mari Korinteli, one of the founders of the publishing house, said that “Planet Read More is a unique project, which has no losers. Each contestant gets some benefits from the competition. They read at least one interesting book. Today students are very busy and they may not have enough time to read fiction. This project encourages students to keep in step with ongoing literary processes.”
Beka Goginava, the competition winner, thanked TSU and Books in Batumi for the interesting and diverse project. “I gained very good experience through participating in the project. The victory was a surprise, because the competition was very high. I think that similar projects should be held more frequently and many more students should participate,” the winner said.
The student competition was launched in April and it lasted for three months. Each week the contestants read the books selected for the competition and took the tests specifically prepared for them. 10 contestants with the highest points competed with each other in the final.
Leaders of each round were also revealed and memorable gifts and certificates were awarded to them. Eight online quizzes were held in frames of the competition; the winners were awarded prizes and additional two points. The idea of the student project belongs to the students of Tbilisi State University and it is implemented jointly by TSU and Books in Batumi publishing house for the third consecutive year. The project aims at promoting youth literacy and offering more literature to students in a form of competition.
