Presentation of Corner for the Blind at TSU Library
A reading corner was opened at the Library of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University for students with disabilities (blind).
First Deputy Rector, Academician Levan Aleksidze said that “International Day of Persons with Disabilities was marked on December 3 and today we witness a very interesting event. The program has been financed by the Soros Foundation and now it’s up to us how successfully we will use this excellent corner. From now on, there is a corner at TSU, where people with disabilities can come freely together with other students and acquire information, which they need so much.”
“It is very important that the initiators of this project are young people, who take care of young people with disabilities. The door of TSU Library is open not only to the university students and staff, but to everyone. All those people, who need to use this literature and techniques, can use them,” Director of TSU Library, Zurab Gaiparashvili said.
The project author, TSU student Karaman-Giorgi Beridze said that “the corner was arranged in frames of the project developed by students and with the support of TSU Library. From now on, TSU will provide an adaptive environment for the blind, where blind young people will be able to use computers, Braille printer, special scanning and reading software that will enable them to enjoy equal conditions with other students.”
By means of library apparatus, for the first time in Georgia Internet became completely available to the blind. The corner at the Shota Rustaveli reading hall of TSU Library is equipped with special computers, printers, discs and literature, Braille keyboard, Braille translation software and printers, computers with special software; by means of this software, users can navigate any website to audio version; Braille books, audio recordings, etc.
The key goal of TSU is to promote the integration of people with disabilities into the university’s space. The corner for the blind was arranged within the framework of the grant Integration of Blind Students and Creation of Adaptive Environment (Open Society Foundation) obtained by a group of TSU students.
