New Academic Year at TSU

An event marking the launch of the 2019-2020 Academic Year was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on September 16.

Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze congratulated the first-year students on the beginning of the new academic year. “I congratulate all students, especially the first-year students, on the beginning of the new academic year. It is important that TSU was again popular among aspiring students this year. The majority of students, who received state grants, were enrolled just at our university. TSU meets the new academic year with new education programs and renovated infrastructure. Along with studying, our students have an opportunity to spend an interesting student life here,” Rector Sharvashidze said.

Daniel Stepanenko, TSU student with highest scores, said: “I am happy to become a student of Tbilisi State University. I did not expect to receive the highest scores. I am very happy and I wish all first-year students success. I have a keen interest in physics and that is why I chose TSU, because this branch and other natural sciences are further developing at TSU. I intend to develop theoretical physics and my dream is to work with other scientists in this direction.”

5,000 aspiring students (by 500 more compared to last year) were enrolled at TSU this year. About half of them received state grants. During the event, TSU awarded memorable gifts to all students with highest scores, including Azerbaijani, Armenian, Abkhazian and Ossetian-language students enrolled at 1+4 program.

Over 200 accredited academic programs are implemented at seven faculties of TSU with over 20 000 students undergoing their studies there. The Tbilisi State University is the first national university in the Caucasus founded by Georgian intellectuals with European education and values. It is a flagship not only by its century-old history, but also by its experience and opportunities. TSU belongs to the top 2% of the world’s best universities, according to U.S. News & World Report – Best Global Universities Ranking. Moreover, in 2019, TSU was again represented in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the fourth consecutive year.
