TSU Becomes Associated Partner of EMLex
Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University has become an associated partner of the European Master in Lexicography (EMLex) programme. The international master’s degree programme was established 10 years ago by a consortium of eight European universities, among them Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany); Károli Gáspár Református Egyetem Budapest (Hungary); Stellenbosch University (South African Republic); Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach (Kattowitz, Poland); Université de Lorraine (France); Universidade do Minho (Portugal); Universidade Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and Universita degli Studi Roma Tre (Italy). The programme has five associated partners, among them Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University; Universität Hildesheim (Germany); University of Texas at Austin (USA); Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and Institut für Deutsche Sprache Mannheim (Germany).
Students are enrolled in a Master’s degree programme once a year. Leading field experts are involved in the learning process to ensure high academic level of teaching lexicography. Students will receive profound training in the theoretical field of modern lexicography, which will enable them to conduct scientific research or to work in an advisory position in the field of publishing and further education. A basic command of German and English is essential for participation in the programme because the lectures will be held in these two languages. Tuition and accommodation fees will be financed by the European Union through its Erasmus+ project. After completing their studies, postgraduates will be able to create print and electronic dictionaries, to work at publishers, etc. Noteworthy that after completing postgraduate studies, students will receive a uniform diploma signed by the Rectors of eight founding universities. Lexicography is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary field and therefore, unification of the resources of eight universities for planning and implementing the learning process opens up unique opportunities for students.
Lexicography is taught at all the three academic steps of TSU. TSU’s becoming an associated partner can just be explained by this fact, as well as by successful holding of the 17th International Congress of the European Association for Lexicography (EURALEX), which raised awareness about the Tbilisi State University and its Lexicographic Center among international lexicographic circles. Starting from 2019, TSU Professor Tinatin Margalitadze will also deliver lectures for the students of the European master program.
