TSU Hosts Evening with Vakhtang Javakhadze
Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted an evening with poet Vakhtang Javakhadze on December 10. Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze awarded Vakhtang Javakhadze, a former TSU alumnus, with the University’s Anniversary Medal for his special contribution to the development of Georgian literature. The evening was dedicated to the memory of the poet’s wife, Nana Grubelashvili.
The evening was held in a format of question and answer session. The participants read out the poet’s poems and held discussions on various topics.
Rector Sharvashidze said that the event dedicated to Vakhtang Javakhadze was organized by students. “Vakhtang Javakhadze is a TSU alumnus. Many of his classmates have become famous writers and poets. This is the generation of the 1960s, which created an entire epoch in Georgian literature. It is important for students to familiarize themselves with his works,” the Rector said.
“Today, I came to my native university, where I spent five years in 1951-1956. I met with students and held a very interesting discussion with them. I read my poems, answered their questions and recollected my youth. It was a very interesting day for me,” Vakhtang Javakhadze said.
“Vakhtang Javakhadze’s works unite the 20th and 21st centuries. He has received a number of poetry awards. Today’s evening was just dedicated to his poetry,” Ana Gogoladze, student of the Faculty of Humanities, said.
Vakhtang Javakhadze is Laureate of Shota Rustaveli and Galaktion Tabidze prizes. He was awarded a literary prize GALA 2008 for the book Unknown in the category of The Best Desk Book of the Year; literary award SABA 2011 for his contribution to the development of Georgian literature; literary awards LITERA and SABA for the book Elegy (2017, in the category of The Best Poetry Collection of the Year).
