New Academic Year at TSU

An event marking the launch of the 2017-2018 Academic Year was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on September 18. As a result of the Unified National Exams in 2017, about 4000 students were enrolled in bachelor’s degree program and about 2000 students in master’s and doctoral programs. Mariam Rogava, who received the highest scores countrywide, was enrolled at the Tbilisi State University. According to the National Assessment and Examination Center, three out of five students, who received the highest scores, became the students of TSU departments of physics and mathematics. The students of San Diego State University, who also received the highest scores, chose TSU academic programs. STEM subjects proved most popular among them. TSU students became finalists in International Chemistry and Mathematics Olympiads. Alexander Saatashvili, who won the 5th place in the Mathematics Olympiad, has been awarded the Rector’s Scholarship.
 
A total of 53 students have embarked on the four-year journey to earn ISET’s first BA degree.      

Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze, Deputy Rector Mikheil Chkhenkeli and Head of Administration Nunu Ovsyannikova congratulated students on the beginning of the new academic year.

Rector Giorgi Sharvashidze said that the Tbilisi State University maintains its leadership and students with highest scores were enrolled just at this university. “Let me congratulate you on the beginning of a long and interesting road. Not only it is the first day of your studies, but it is the beginning of student life, a step towards your future career, profession, science,” he said.    

Memorable gifts were awarded to the students, who were enrolled at the Tbilisi State University with the highest scores. The company Geocell awarded Mariam Rogava with a special gift – iPhone 7.

Mariam Rogava said that she chose TSU because it offered a very interesting academic program, while a wide range of its exchange programs will help her in further development. “A lot of exchange programs offered by TSU open up wide opportunities to students and I also hope that I will seize upon this opportunity. Today was a special day for me, because I came to the Tbilisi State University for the first time; but it was twice special, because I was met so warmly; the Rector personally congratulated me and I made sure once again that I made the right choice, when I decided to enter the Tbilisi State University.”   

An announcement about the launch of a new season of student literary competition Autumn Legend was also made today. The competition will be held for the ninth time already and along with Tbilisi, students from various regional higher educational institutions of Georgia will be eligible to participate.

TSU meets a new academic year with renovated infrastructure. About GEL 1 million was allocated for this purpose. With the financial support of the Tbilisi City Hall, bicycle parking was arranged at TSU Buildings I, VI, IX, X and the Library. In addition, two catering facilities operating at the university serve students and TSU staff at an affordable price. Three more catering facilities will be opened this fall. The university’s new dormitory will accept students during the new academic year.  Presently some infrastructure works are underway at the newly built modern dormitory in the vicinity of Lisi Lake capable of housing 320 students.

Over 200 accredited academic programs are implemented at seven faculties of TSU with over 20 000 students undergoing their studies there; among them are Abkhazian, Azerbaijani and Armenian language students enrolled in the Georgian language educational program.
