NBG Issues Collector Coin Marking TSU’s 100th Anniversary

The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) issued a collector coin in denomination of 5 Lari to mark the 100th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU). President of the National Bank of Georgia, Koba Gvenetadze; Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze and coin designer, Nino Gongadze presented the anniversary coin to the audience.

“I am pleased to present a successful result of yet another interesting project implemented by the National Bank - a collector coin marking the 100th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. It has been an honor for the National Bank of Georgia to work on this project. The National Bank of Georgia congratulates the University on its 100th anniversary and dedicates 5 Lari denomination silver collector coin to it,” President of NBG, Koba Gvenetadze said.

“Tbilisi State University is the first university in the Caucasus, which laid the foundation for the establishment of European standard high school in Georgia through teaching in Georgian and giving due consideration to Georgian educational traditions,” Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze said, noting that TSU still leads by number of publications in journals with a high impact factor and belongs to the top 2% of the world’s best universities (U.S. News & World Report – Best Global Universities Ranking (2017).

“More than 300 000 students have graduated from the University over one hundred years of its existence. Its foundation was the major development in terms of strengthening Georgia’s independence and statehood. We are glad that the National Bank’s decision is associated with this date,” Rector Sharvashidze added.

Coin design was selected through an open competition and its author is Nino Gongadze. The coin has been minted by the Royal Mint of Spain in amount of 1500 pieces. The sale price is GEL 95 and the coins will be available starting from February 1, 2018 at the Cash Center of NBG, Money Museum in Kvareli and online store.
