TSU Hosts Presentation of National Atlas of Georgia and Geographic Atlas of Georgia
On September 23, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted a presentation of the first-ever English-language National Atlas of Georgia in the history of independent Georgia, as well as Geographic Atlas of Georgia (in Georgian language). The both publications were prepared by TSU Vakhushti Bagrationi Institute of Geography.
“The National Atlas of Georgia is a very important, unique publication. It includes unique information about Georgia’s geography, as well as geology, culture and sport. It offers a lot of articles, which will provide comprehensive information to any person interested in Georgia. Highly ranked Georgian and German scientists worked on it. We proudly presented the National Atlas to Frankfurt Book Fair. Besides its scientific side, the publication is also very interesting from polygraphic point of view,” Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze said.
The National Atlas of Georgia is a scientific and informational cartographic work, containing about 120 maps, texts, graphs and photos. The Atlas provides information about the country’s location, natural conditions, resources, cultural heritage, history, population, farming, social sphere and ecological situation. It also provides information about modern scientific achievements in various spheres.
New population census data were used in drawing thematic maps of human geography. The Atlas will significantly help the country’s scientific and educational fields and it is designed for scientists as well as broad public. The Atlas was printed in Stuttgart, Germany by Franz Steiner Verlag, an academic publishing house, in 2018.
Nana Bolashvili, director of the TSU Vakhushti Bagrationi Institute of Geography, said that the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has financially supported the project of the National Atlas of Georgia. “The Atlas was created at the TSU Institute of Geography in partnership with the Department of Geography at Giessen University. The year 2018 was very fruitful for the Institute of Geography, because two very important atlases were created,” she noted.
The Geographic Atlas of Georgia was printed at Palitra L Publishing. It is a new, modern publication, enabling the readers to familiarize themselves with the country’s political, natural and social-cultural environment. Voluminous bibliographies, representing the source of materials provided in the Atlas, may become the basis for readers to conduct independent research.
