On May 29, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted a presentation of three books printed in frames of the scientific project “Soviet Utopian Linguistic Theories and the First Georgian Manuals of Linguistics” implemented by Giorgi Akhvlediani Society for the History of Linguistics.
According to Professor Tinatin Bolkvadze, author of one of the books “Georgian Triangle of Soviet Linguistics: Niko Marr, I. Stalin, Arn. Chikobava”, the books contain Soviet utopian linguistic theories and the first Georgian manuals in linguistics. “The most utopian theory created in the Soviet period was Niko Marr’s Japhetic theory. The books contain archival materials from the history of Soviet linguistics. These three books unite the history of Soviet linguistics, on the one hand, and those serious confrontations that existed in Soviet linguistics, on the other,” Prof. Tinatin Bolkvadze said.
“One of the most important campaigns carried out by Stalin is related to the problems of Soviet linguistics. The book uses archival materials to discuss the roles of Niko Marr, Ioseb Stalin and Arnold Chikobava in the history of Soviet linguistics. This topic is very interesting,” Gela Charkviani, Georgian diplomat, writer and educator, said.
A book in three parts “Giorgi Akhvlediani, Introduction to Linguistics 1918-1919” was also released. The collection contains a restored rare book, the first lecture course in linguistics delivered by Giorgi Akhvlediani since the very first days of founding the Tbilisi University. Another book “From the History of Soviet Linguistics: Archival Materials” was also published. The book contains articles prepared by young scientists and documents from various archives describing the history of Soviet linguistics till 1950. A great part of archival documents used in the collection will be released for the first time.
The books were prepared and published with the financial support of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation.
