International Conference “Chemistry Today and in the Future”
An international student and youth conference “Chemistry Today and in the Future” was opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on November 16. Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze, Georgian and foreign scientists and students attended the event.
“The level of teaching and learning of chemistry was traditionally high at Tbilisi State University. Specialists of this field are in high demand in our country. Much still needs to be done for the country and the university in this respect. Recently, the American Chemical Society made a decision to open its representation at TSU. It is yet another confirmation of the success of our chemists,” Rector Sharvashidze said.
Participants of the conference presented papers on the important fields of chemistry, among them theoretical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical and analytical chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, chemical technology, materials science, pharmacological chemistry, applied chemistry, ecology and environmental chemistry.
“The conference is very important because its format is extremely interesting – an international student and youth conference. The Georgian market demand for chemists is higher than for the specialists of other scientific disciplines. Our chemists are successfully working in many fields. Not a single field will develop today without chemistry, from pharmacy to technique and defense industry, cosmic or other technologies,” says Nodar Lekishvili, TSU Emeritus Professor and President of Georgian Chemistry Society.
Students and young scientists from leading scientific centers and universities of Georgia, the United States, Russia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Turkey, Pakistan, Hungary and Australia, as well as members of the American Chemistry Society Georgia participated in the conference.
“The conference is designed for young scientists and students. Research works conducted by the speakers with their supervisors are presented. My research was conducted with one of the American universities on neo-particles, which can be potentially used in nanomedicine,” Sopio Kobauri, senior research fellow at the Agrarian University said.
The conference was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of TSU. It was organized by TSU and Georgian Chemical Society and co-organized by Georgian Technical University; Tbilisi State Medical University; Akaki Tsereteli Kutaisi State University and Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University.
