2nd International Scientific Conference ‘Space, Society, Politics’

The 2nd international scientific conference Space, Society, Politics was opened at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on June 25. The conference is organized by the TSU Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, academic staff, students and invited guests attended the event.

The topic of the conference is “The Sea in an Interdisciplinary Context’. The conference aims at promoting the role of the world ocean and coastline space against the background of planetary integration of states, peoples and cultures.

TSU Rector Vladimer Papava said that “it is important that the university continues those best traditions, which were established 90 years ago. Human geography direction is still developing successfully at our university. It is confirmed by this international conference, where a lot of interesting reports were delivered. I think that similar events will be interesting for both scientists and students.”

“As known, the sea is very important for Georgia. Geopolitical visions of maritime nations differ from those of closed nations. Quite interesting reports related to these issues will be delivered at the conference. For example, one of the reports will focus on the problem of international importance – maritime smuggling. The conference is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of foundation of the Department of Economic Geography at TSU. Noteworthy that in post-Soviet space the first Department of Economic Geography, which is today called Human Geography Direction, was just opened at the Tbilisi State University. A year later similar department was opened at the Moscow State University. It is important that this branch is still developing. Students are studying human geography science with huge interest,” TSU Professor Revaz Gachechiladze said.

The conference is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of foundation of the Department of Economic Geography by Professor Giorgi Gekhtman.
The sessions available at the conference, which will last till June 27, are: Globalization and Regional Researches; Economics; Port Systems, Transport and Regional Development; Human Geography, International Relations and Political Sciences; Sociology, Semiotics, Journalism and Mass Communications, Psychology.
