International PhD Program in Digital Humanities - Pre-selection round

Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany), in partnership with Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) and Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University (BSU), announces a competition to select and train PhD candidates for the international PhD program “Digital Humanities.”      

The preparatory stage of the international PhD program will be funded by the German Volkswagen Foundation (Volkswagenstiftung) and it envisages theoretical and practical training of candidates selected through the competition in Georgia and Germany for participation in the PhD program “Digital Humanities.”      

The competition for the preparatory stage of PhD program is open to any students, who have completed their master’s degrees in any Georgian university (or will complete before September 1, 2017) in the following specializations: philology (linguistics, literature studies, translation studies, lexicography…), history (ancient studies, source criticism, archaeology, ethnology, cultural and cultural heritage research), social science (sociology, psychology, law, political science) with the focus on the Caucasus region.

Those PhD students, who have yet to complete their doctoral thesis and want to conduct their research in the context of digital humanities, are eligible to submit applications.

The contestants have to submit the following documents (in Georgian) to participate in the first round of the competition:

  1. Biography (CV);
  2. A copy of diploma of completed master’s degree (or a certificate of studying on master’s/doctoral program);
  3. An apparent title of a doctoral work and a short description of research topic, which should substantiate the advantage of processing the research topic by digital methods (2 pages);
  4. A letter of consent from an apparent supervisor or a reference from master’s thesis supervisor;
  5. A copy of certificate (if any such exists) of attending seasonal schools in digital humanities (or in respect of the topic relevant to the specialization);
  6. English language certificate (if any such exists). Those contestants, who fail to submit an English language certificate, will have to pass an English language test.

Contestants selected through the competition will pass the first stage of qualification at international workshops organized in frames of the project, which will be held at TSU and BSU (in Georgian). The selected candidates will pass the second stage of qualification at Goethe University Frankfurt (in English).

25 candidates will be selected for the first round of the competition.
