The Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) has improved its position in Webometrics Ranking of World Universities and is also ranked 1st in the Caucasus region. According to the latest ranking, TSU moved up from a rank of 830 among nearly 24 000 world universities to a rank of 734. It also moved up from a rank of 349 among European universities to a rank of 324. The Tbilisi State University is the first in the Caucasus region and Georgia. It is ranked 30th among Eastern European universities.

According to the Webometrics Ranking, the best university of Armenia is ranked 2314th and the best university of Azerbaijan is ranked 4137th.
 
The “Webometrics Ranking of World Universities” is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. The CSIC consisted in 2006 of 126 centers and institutes distributed throughout Spain. During the ranking the organization takes into consideration the number of pages recovered from four engines: Google, Yahoo, Live Search and Exalead; number of pages on the website; number of texts as well as number of papers and citations for each academic domain.
